Resident Return Visa
Subclass 155 and 157 Visa: Resident Return
The Resident Return Visa allow current or former permanent residents and eligible former citizens to re-enter Australia as permanent residents if their travel facility has expired. It enables multiple travel entries for a set period (up to 5 years, depending on eligibility). You only need this visa if you plan to leave and return to Australia; it is not required if you remain in Australia and do not intend to travel.
Resident Return Visas fall under three categories in terms of duration of validity:
- 5-Year RRV
- 1-Year RRV
- 3-Month RRV (subclass 157)
Travel Facility Overview
This visa lets you travel in and out of Australia as a permanent resident while your travel facility is valid. If it expires while you’re overseas, you must obtain an RRV to return as a permanent resident.
When You Need an RRV
If you plan to travel after your travel facility expires, you must apply for a Resident Return Visa (RRV) before re-entering Australia. If you stay in Australia and don’t travel, you don’t need one.
Validity and Key Rules
RRV travel facility length depends on eligibility: up to 5 years if residency requirements are met, or 12 months/3 months in other cases. It can’t be extended, transferred, or refunded.
Key Points
- No limit on RRV applications
- Check expiry dates on VEVO before travel
- Apply before travelling if needed
- Cannot include family members in one application
- Travel without a valid facility may affect PR rights and citizenship eligibility
