Overview
The Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189) is points-tested visa and is designed for professionals with occupations in demand across Australia and offers freedom, flexibility, and a direct pathway to citizenship.
Eligibility & Key Requirements
To apply for the Subclass 189 visa (Points-Tested stream), you must:
- Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) via SkillSelect
- Receive an invitation to apply
- Score at least 65 points
- Be under 45 years of age
- Have an occupation on the skilled occupation list
- Obtain a positive skills assessment
- Meet English, health, and character requirements
For other streams, additional residence and eligibility criteria apply depending on your passport or visa history.

1. Check your Eligibility
Your occupation must appear on the relevant skilled occupation list, and you must meet the minimum points threshold, as well as age, English proficiency and skills assessment requirements.
2. Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI)
Apply through SkillSelect and provide details about your qualifications, skills and experience.
3. Receive an Invitation to Apply
If your EOI is selected, you will receive an invitation to lodge a visa application.
4. Apply for the Visa
Submit your visa application with supporting documents, including skills assessment, English test results, and character/health checks.
5. Processing and Decision
Your application will be processed, and a decision will be made.
