Eligibility & Key Requirements

To apply for the Subclass 491 visa, you must:

  • Be nominated by a state or territory or sponsored by an eligible relative
  • Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) via SkillSelect
  • Receive an invitation to apply
  • Score at least 65 points
  • Be under 45 years of age at invitation
  • Have an occupation on the relevant skilled occupation list
  • Obtain a suitable skills assessment
  • Meet English, health, and character requirements

Eligible relatives must live in a designated regional area and be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen.

Pathway to Permanent Residency:

  • Eligible to apply for Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) Visa (Subclass 191) after 3 years, subject to requirements

Important Conditions:

  • Cannot apply for most other permanent visas until you meet the 3-year requirement
  • Must maintain nomination or sponsorship
  • Family members can be included and must meet health and character requirements

Your occupation must appear on the relevant skilled occupation list, and you must meet the minimum points requirement (currently 65 points) and other eligibility criteria including age, English proficiency, and skills assessment.

You must either be: a. Nominated by a state or territory government, or b. Sponsored by an eligible relative living in a designated regional area.

If selected, you’ll be invited to apply for the visa within the specified timeframe.
